Hey, you also explain it on your website, I believe: https://www.cog-genomics.org/plink/1.9/formats#cov
Problems understanding .cov files in Plink
I’m doing a GWAS using plink and I’m trying to write a covariant file. I can't get my head around the format of a covariant file or even how to write one, could you please explain it to me? How would I write a covariant file including sex and 10 principal components with plink in a Linux command line?

Yes, but when rereading that description yesterday, I realized that it was probably too terse for first-time users. So I provided a different explanation that would generate a concrete example for him to look at.
I will be adding a bunch of examples to the documentation over the next several weeks.
