Two post-doctoral positions are available in Dr. Liz Worthey’s Center for Computational Genomics and Data Science, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology. Our center works to extract knowledge from biological datasets to increase understanding of human disease. Further; we seek to translate this information for the treatment of patients. As such, the center has close collaborations with clinicians and researchers at a number of nationally-acclaimed medical centers including Children’s of Alabama.

We are seeking passionate and motivated postdocs to join our team of individuals from diverse educational backgrounds including software engineers, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, data scientists, variant analysts, and geneticists. Projects include the development and application of omic, bioinformatic, and data science based methods for identification and understanding of causal molecular variation in rare or more common undiagnosed or misdiagnosed disease. We also focus on the identification and study of variation that alters an individual's response to therapeutics or modifies clinical presentation, progression, and/or outcome.

Project will depend on the interests and abilities of the applicant. The positions are for 2-3 years with possible extension. Positions will provide continued training for those interested in the transition to scientific independence, industry, or other types of positions. The candidate will have opportunities to write manuscripts and grants, mentor students, and present key findings from the project at national and international conferences.

Ideal candidates would have:

  • A Ph.D. in genomics, genetics, informatics, statistics, bioinformatics, computer science, etc. with a general background in computational and/or molecular biology.
  • Demonstrated research achievements.
  • Good communication skills to support leading projects and project teams, communications with team members and stakeholders with varied scientific, engineering, and clinical backgrounds, and for writing grants and manuscripts.
  • Experience in programming languages (Python, R, etc.), shell scripting, version control and workflow tools (Snakemake, Nextflow, etc.)
  • Strong skills in data analysis. Experience in genome-wide association studies and polygenic risk score calculation, multi-omic data integration, variant modelling, and/or interpretation is a plus.
  • Excellent decision-making, presentation, and organization skills.

Postdoc Benefits: UAB is a highly collegial and interactive environment that has an active Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) providing mentoring and career guidance. Competitive postdoc awards are available including internships, grant incentives, funds to enhance education and collaboration outside UAB, and teaching opportunities at local universities. A Postdoc Research Day with monetary awards is held annually. The OPE strongly encourages UAB research mentors to follow the National Research Service Award stipend level guidelines, and postdoctoral scholars qualify for health, life, and other insurances. They also have the right to participate in the university’s 403(b) program and enjoy vacation, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and other benefits. UAB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and family-friendly environment.
