If you have never used GNU Parallel, but you are using the command line, then you should consider spending 15 minutes on reading chapter 1+2.

If you are a long time user, improve your skills by walking through the book and (re-)discover ways to efficiently solve problems using GNU Parallel.

The book covers general concepts with toy examples that can be run. There are more realistic examples in the manpage and bioinformatics examples here on Biostar.
