Forum: hands on resources for high school students with advanced CS skills

Hi all,

I was hoping to crowdsource ideas to help get a high school student started thinking about biology and informatics.

The student I have in mind is a gifted computer programmer, my understanding is he can already work on games requiring 3D modeling, etc. His knowledge of math and biology does not appear to be similarly advanced at the moment.

I am open to any suggestions, but I was wondering if anyone has tackled this problem or a related problem recently and what recommendations you might have.

A bit more specifically, I remember a while back Atul Butte offered a course to undergrads, I believe at Stanford, that asked them to pull down data from the 1000 genomes project, parse it, and use it to ask and answer basic questions about genetics. I just looked for this course online, but was unable to find it. If anyone has a link or the old syllabus for this course, reading through that might be enough to give me ideas as well.

Thanks very much for any guidance.

A really good starting point is Project Rosalind, though these are quite small tasks to begin with. Things like parsing a fasta sequences, doing arithmetic on GC content and that kind of thing. But all useful skills.

If you’re looking for something a little more like a research project, there are quite a lot of informaticians with github repos designed for courses, or that have things like ipython notebooks full of analyses. You might want to browse around there? (If I think of any specific examples I’ll post links).

Do you mind if I move this to Forum? Seems like a better fit to the type of question.

not at all. i will remember this for the future. thanks.

Hi, I know how to help you, you need to read a lot of literature to do this, I can recommend you a service like this https://essaybison.com/buy-thesis/ where you can read a lot of useful information, buy a dissertation or an essay, I was glad to help you.
