Dear all,

There is an opening position in Karolinska Institute. Application

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Research Group and Project Description

Tumor cells display metabolic profiles that are remarkably distinct from their normal tissue of origin. This is to ensure fulfillment of their higher bioenergetic/biosynthetic needs required to support rapid proliferation. We have previously identified metabolic heterogeneity in tumors and are currently trying to identify molecular regulators that shape tumor metabolism and metabolic diversity, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel drug targets and biomarkers. To study these questions we employ a translational approach including primary patient material paralleled by studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms in cancer cells, normal cells and cancer mouse models. We are using an integrative approach consisting of Computational analyses/Bioinformatics, metabolomics, proteomics and transcriptomics as well as various genetic, biochemical and molecular biological tools with the ultimate goal of identifying novel drug targets and prognostic markers.

The announced Postdoc project will have a central focus analyzing on our generated Metabolomics data, Proteomics data, Small Molecule and CRISPR/Cas9 Screenings and RNASeq data. Additionally, analyzing data from public databases including TCGA, Ensembl, cBioPortal will also be in the focus.

For more information please see our published work that includes computational analyses:

Duties

The candidate will have the possibility to develop their own computational projects and are expected to integrate in ongoing projects within the field of molecular cancer research with a focus on Tumor metabolism. We seek exceptional, dedicated, highly motivated and hardworking individuals with substantial experience in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics. The candidate should have documented experience in these fields (as shown by publications in international peer-reviews journals). The candidate should have commitment to solving biological problems and communicating these solutions and have the ability to multi-task across different projects.

In relation to the duties, we seek candidates with following skills:

  • Deep understanding of, and experience in, processing high throughout biomedical data: data cleaning, normalization, analysis, interpretation and visualization.
  • Experience in, at least two, of the following areas: proteomics, metabolomics microarray analysis, RNASeq. Knowledge on how to retrieve and re-analyze data from public databases: TCGA, cBioPortal, NCBI, Ensembl, or similar.
  • Experience in submitting data sets to public repositories.
  • The candidate will have to be able to communicate science with scientists from other fields and to be able to work independently. It could also be beneficial if the candidate have experience in performing wet-lab experiments such as Cell culturing, Western Blot, qPCR etc. The candidate must be willing to work ambitiously and effectively in a collaborative environment with a strong commitment to research. In addition, good communication skills and good proficiency in spoken and written English.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics or related discipline(s). Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational department in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying. One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Type of scholarship

Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  5. A motivation letter why you want to join the group and state your career goals (no more than one page). The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Its vision is to significantly contribute to the improvement of human health. Karolinska Institutet accounts for the single largest share of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden and offers the country's broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published. Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
