The laboratory of Dr. Ian Sudbery, in collaboration with Prof. Stuart Wilson, seeks a Research Associate to work on a mixed molecular biology/bioinformatics project examining the role of splicing in regulating the stability and non-coding sequence content of transcripts in cancer and normal biology. The biology of splicing, post-transcriptional gene regulation, nonsense mediated decay, miRNA targeting, RNA-binding proteins, and cancer are all relevant.

This exciting opportunity is ideal for someone with experience of wet-lab and dry-lab approaches. Alternatively, this position provides a fantastic opportunity for a highly-motivated scientist with a strong background in one skill set and an established and demonstrable interest/aptitude in the other to advance their career in this highly sought-after direction in a supportive environment. We do however ask that applicants have at least some experience in wet-lab molecular biology.

The project will involve analysis of large existing datasets, as well as the generation and analysis of new next-generation sequencing datasets, along-side the use of state of art molecular biology techniques for investigating RNA biology and gene-regulation.

You will have a PhD in an appropriate subject (or equivalent experience) and a research record in either Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics. You will be able to demonstrate that you have a quantitative mindset, are always looking to acquire and use new skills and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary way. You will look forward to being part of a community of researchers working towards common or related goals and be looking forward to helping foster such a community.

Both labs reside within the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) at the university of Sheffield, and exceptionally broad department, internationally recognized for its excellence in biology research. Biology research at Sheffield was ranked 1st in Biomedical Sciences Allied to Health and 5th in Biology Sciences in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise.
