Location: Cambridge, UK

Start Date: Immediate

Salary: A competitive package including share options

Closing Date: 5th November 2017

Healx is a Cambridge, UK startup using computational methods to identify existing drugs that may treat rare diseases. We're hiring a full stack developer to help build intuitive interfaces for our internal research tools.

1 in 17 people will have a rare disease at some point in their lives: that's 3.5 million people in the UK alone. 75% of rare diseases affect children, and are often chronic or fatal: 30% of patients with rare diseases will die before their fifth birthday. Our approach can find potential treatments for these patients at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional drug discovery.

At Healx we integrate and analyse a wealth of data on drugs and diseases, employing machine learning, natural language processing and computational biology to predict new uses for existing drugs. This is an opportunity to use your skills to make a real impact on patients' lives.

The role

You will join a small team of software engineers to work on our internal web-based tools that enable scientific data analysis. In particular you will build intuitive interfaces to help navigate and visualise large amounts of complex data on drugs, diseases and the relationships between them.

Some projects you may be involved with:

  • Developing interactive visualisations of biological networks
  • Improving the way our expert scientific curators capture disease information
  • Building interfaces to monitor progress of data through our analytics pipelines

You'll work closely with other members of Healx, including bioinformaticians, scientists and business development managers, to understand their role and how our internal tools can help them in their day-to-day work. Since our users are internal, you can get rapid feedback on changes, and see first-hand the impact of your work.

We believe in working sustainably, meaning taking care of yourself and getting things done without working long hours. We care about the quality of our work, its impact on patients, and each other.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a full stack developer with a focus on front-end development. Experience with data visualisation and an eye for design would be especially useful. We've used JavaScript and React to build our front-ends, Python and PostgreSQL to build our backends, and GraphQL to join them together. We don't expect you to be an expert in all of these technologies, but experience in any of these would be helpful.

We'd like to find someone who will thrive in the dynamic environment of a startup company and is excited by the company's mission.

How to apply

To apply, please email jobs@healx.io with your CV and a covering letter explaining why you're interested in the role.

Closing date for applications is 5th November 2017

About Healx

Healx is a Cambridge, UK startup using computational methods to identify existing drugs that may treat rare diseases, allowing treatments to be found at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional drug discovery. There are over 7,000 rare diseases that affect an estimated 350 million people worldwide, most of which lack effective treatment. We work closely with patient groups and charities to find therapies for rare diseases that may not otherwise receive sufficient research investment.
