Hyperbolic significance threshold for volcano plot

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to generate an "statistically" meaningful hyperbolic function that could be used as significance threshold for volcanos plots.

I have seen examples here and here in proteomics, and a colleague has the method for t-test in his PhD thesis but I wonder if it is possible to generalize it for other "tests" like wilcoxon and welch's.

I think it would be nice if that such application was more available and developed outside the proteomics field and t-tests.

It looks like it would have utility in many parts of biological science research, primarily RNA-seq, obviously. Currently, the cut-off for statistical significance in such experiments is mostly chosen manually. I guess this means that you should develop this further in your group in Cambridge? :)
