There are not "popular" resources for machine learning in Bioinformatics generally speaking. There are some to solve specific problems. I recommend you take the course Andrew Ng is giving in Coursera, to get a grasp on machine learning algorithms. Remember machine learning is a mean to an end, and you seem to me lacking the end.
