UCSF Library Data Science Initiative Overview and Primary Mission:

With the growth in data intensive sciences, data science skills are becoming increasingly necessary for researchers to successfully collect, analyze, interpret, manage, and archive their research data. The Data Science Initiative (DSI) is the UCSF Library's attempt to gather together experts from across the university to build an education and collaboration hub for data science activities at UCSF. Data Science in the UCSF Library context means anything that involves working with data (collecting it, analyzing it, securing it, archiving it, sharing it, etc.). The workshops and programs we offer will teach scientists how to program in R and Python, create data visualizations, use software to analyze large biomedical datasets, share their data to meet publication requirements, find public genomic data and much more. Operating out of the UCSF Library on the Parnassus campus, the DSI will be a community-driven initiative enabling researchers, faculty, staff, and students from all disciplines to come together to learn, connect, explore, and innovate.

In keeping with the long-standing mission of the UCSF Library, the DSI focuses on serving all UCSF students, faculty and staff regardless of their area of research or level of technical expertise. The DSI will host a variety of activities and programs, driven by the needs of the UCSF community, including classes, workshops, meetups, seminars, and 1-1 consultations with DSI experts.

Position Overview:

The UCSF DSI seeks a dynamic, innovative individual for the position of Scientific Lead. The successful candidate will have a strong background in the biomedical sciences and an entrepreneurial approach to developing new services and programs related to data science. The DSI Scientific Lead is responsible for assessing the data science needs of the UCSF research community, and – in close collaboration with the existing DSI Data Management Lead and our DSI partners - developing and implementing a plan to address data science needs through a variety of activities including instruction, consultation, and web-based information tools. The DSI Scientific Lead will work closely with other DSI staff to design, develop, and implement programs to support a vibrant multidisciplinary data science community and culture at UCSF.
