Is there a site/ resource that highlights which are the commonly used type of visualizations in bioinformatics? For e.g. we use heatmap, concept plot and the routine ones, are there other that get used? Is there any backing dataset for these as well?

I guess there is not any "Commonly" used charts in all NGS/ bioinformatics, as these fields ( NGS/ bioinformatics) contain very different and diverse domains.
Of course you can make your investigation with focusing on each field separately (e.g RNA-seq, miRNA-seq, WGS and . . . ) and check several papers about them to see more frequent charts.
For example, in this article some charts that are usually used in RNA-seq papers are present.
Some companies also offer Bioinformatic Analysis services, you can collect a pipeline and related charts from their BA service,too.
Finally, what I most admire is the papers with some novelty in design and clever biological concept (not a clone of other stupidograph) ;-)

Exactly, it's all dependent on the datatype which is used in that particular field.
Every dish has it's own different recipe. The question is, what do you want to cook?
