Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). We are offering an international and interdisciplinary environment with a very collaborative and family friendly atmosphere as well as many opportunities for career development. The city of Heidelberg has an active international social community and is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of Germany.

EMBL is seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics engineer to work in the group of Prof. Matthias Hentze. The research focuses on the discovery of novel RNA-binding proteins and identifying their role in health and disease. The group uses new next-generation sequencing and mass-spectrometry-based technologies to identify and functionally characterize RNA-binding protein targets. The successful applicant will be involved in the computational analysis and interpretation of these data. She/he will create workflows based on existing tools and further develop analysis methodologies in order to translate novel data types into biological discoveries.

The successful candidate will be the bioinformatics keystone of a research team, collaborating closely with experimentalists that produce large amounts of data. This position is tightly embedded in the overall research of the lab and will make crucial contributions to the scientific outcomes. The position provides a unique opportunity to acquire practical data science skills that are in high demand and to develop a career in cutting edge bioinformatics services and infrastructures. The position will be supported by a senior bioinformatics postdoc in the lab and will be complemented by an excellent network of bioinformaticians as well as computational and scientific facilities at EMBL.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a university degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, biophysics, computer science or related fields (MSc or PhD). An educational background or practical knowledge in the analysis of large datasets, working in Linux environments and good programming skills are required. Prior experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, NGS datasets and Python (or other scripting languages) is necessary. Knowledge of software tool development and the statistical programming language R/Bioconductor is an advantage. A general understanding of biological questions will help to communicate with other scientists.

The candidate should be proactive and have good problem-solving skills. Furthermore, she/he should be able to work independently and integrate well in a team environment. Strong communication skills as well as the ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team are essential. As the working language of the institute is English, very good written and oral English language skills are essential.
