The University of Luxembourg has the following vacancy at the Neuropathology Core Unit of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine

Postdoctoral Candidate for the Investigation of Dopamine Neuron Function and Integrity in Mouse Genetic Reference Strains (M/F)

  • 12-month contract, extendable up to 24 additional months, 40 hours/week (full time)
  • PhD level
  • Start date: 1st of May, 2016
  • Ref: R-AGR-0667-10-C

For a recently awarded FNR CORE grant on Identification of Novel Genetic and Epigenetic Modulators of Dopaminergic Neuron Structure and Function, we are recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for the neuropathological and neurochemical investigation of the nigro-striatal circuitry in mouse genetic reference strains (Collaborative Cross and Chromosome Substitution strains). The project will be carried out as a collaboration between the Systems Biology group at the Life Sciences Research Unit (LSRU) and the Neuropathology Core Unit at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), together with internal and external partners in Europe and USA. - The Postdoctoral fellow will conduct in-depth neuropathological, neurochemical, and protein biochemical analyses of brains of various strains of mice that differ in specific nervous system features. The fellow will be affiliated with the LCSB, and work under the guidance of Dr. Manuel Buttini, head of the Neuropathology Core. The LCSB strives to combine experimental biology approaches with computational ones to better understand cellular functions and gene regulation in neurological diseases. The fellow will be expected to work closely with the team of the Systems Biology group at the LSRU, and with a research team at the Helmholtz Centre in Braunschweig, Germany. The project is aimed at combining transcriptomic and epigenomic analysis with mouse genetics, metabolomics, histological, and biochemical analyses to identify novel genes and regulatory regions modulating dopaminergic neuron structure and function.

Your Role

  • Breed different mouse strains, and prepare brain tissues or brain regions for analysis
  • Perform neuropathological, neurochemical, and protein biochemical measurements of mouse brain tissues
  • Document, analyse, and interpret the data
  • Actively work with collaborators to integrate the obtained results
  • Write up manuscript drafts, and present the data at internal and international conferences

Your Profile

  • PhD in neuroscience, or neurobiology
  • FELASA B or C certification or equivalent, and solid experience in experimental work with animals is expected
  • Experience with neuroanatomy, immunostaining, microscopy, and quantitative image analysis required
  • Experience with neurochemical and protein biochemical techniques a plus
  • Strong interest and some background in mouse genetics a plus
  • Excellent working knowledge of English is required
  • Solid publication record appropriate with level of experience
  • The candidate will be integrated into a collaborative environment and needs to have strong communication skills

We offer

  • Fully funded position
  • An exciting international and interdisciplinary research environment
  • Modern and well-equipped laboratories
  • State-of-the-art equipment and analysis tools in neurobiology and mouse models of neurological disease
  • Travel opportunities to visit workshops, scientific conferences, and collaborators
  • The University offers highly competitive salaries based on the candidate's experience and is an equal opportunity employer.
