Basic Bioinformatics Setup--What do I need?
Hello Biostars, I'm a biotechnology undergraduate working on a metadata from a methylation project in conjunction with my mentor. As of yet, I have been working off my laptop (1 core) and a 3 TB hard drive. However, I don't have enough processing power to sift through the data on my laptop on a timely basis. I'm interested in setting up a "bioinformatics lab bench" cheaply--that is, on a student's budget. Any recommendations on hardware?

AMD can get you u a lot of CPU cores for minimal $$. Talk to the local CompSci kids, they like building PCs on a budget.

Take a look at the EC2 Amazon resource. There are many tutorials to learn how to use it

They rent you many different instances, that is, type of computers that fit your needs with different cores and memory and power.

You don't have to be worried about maintaining your computers, to purchase expensive equipment that will become outdated in short time, and with pre-payment, is pretty cheap. You pay for what you use
