Development of a new version of our software: aka Biostars 3.0 is now underway. We hope to release within 5-8 weeks. For a list of planned features see: https://github.com/ialbert/biostar-central/issues/291

Some of the main features that we aim for are:

  1. greatly simplified deployment of the site with minimal installation requirements
  2. content federation: any Biostars site will be able to search for and link to content on other Biostars sites (requires agreement between site owners of course).
  3. much easier site customization

In other news today (January 27, 2015) we have enabled a public visit tracker for Biostar. Scroll to the bottom to see a globe that tracks visits. Quite fascinating to look at. For more detailed information use the following:

It would be very useful to implement a feature where it shows the previous posts about the question dynamically while typing it, as that of stack overflow (Questions that may already have your answer). This way, lot of redundant questions can be reduced.

We will try that - there are some interface challenges to that though - it is not clear how well the SO interface works" how many questions don't actually get asked - they have plenty of duplicates - though also huge traffic.
