Tool: OpenSPP, a wet-lab database management system, for storing strains, plasmids and primers

Hello all.

I'd like to take some minutes of yours and present this lab database manage system: OpenSPP at Strain/Plasmid/Primer database. It is still under development, and my goal is to make it the best in market, and make it free. Your comments and suggestions will be much appreciated.

You can also log in as demo/demo for a trial.

p.s. I've included as a show case a pedigree tree of E. coli K-12 according to Bachmann, 1996.

Hi,

The database is not accessible for some reason and access to the group is restricted.

Very sorry about this. Should be 'http', not 'https'. The link has been corrected. The group doesn't have anything in it yet, but I'll modify the permission there to correct his.

A few comments:

  1. Every software tool needs a name so that people can refer to it unambiguously.
  2. Going to the main page and seeing a big picture with no other information makes for an inefficient design. The user does not understand what this is, what it does and how it works. One needs to scroll a few pages to understand that. Many potential users will leave before getting there. At the very least provide images relevant to the use of the tool with some text that provides context.
  3. Focus on what the tool does not how it is written - your users don't care about perldancer or bootstrap.
  4. Find a collaborator if you don't have already and use it with their lab.
  5. Use a site like Biostar to provide support - people don't like to register to new groups to read about what the tool does.
