Ovals and Rectangles in TCS Haplotype Networks

I am trying to create Haplotype Networks using TCS. I am a bit confused as to what the rectangles and ovals mean. The document says the rectangles represent outgroups, but I am not quite clear what an outgroup means in this context (or is it the same as outgroup in a phylogenetic tree?)
