Is size selection always necessary in building NGS library?

I've seen NGS library protocols always have a size selection step after adapter ligation and amplification. I'm wondering why is size selection needed and what does it do exactly to help the sequencing? Is it always necessary to do it?

Thanks!

sequencing

What purpose are these reads being used for?

The sequence sizes need to fall within a certain range for the instrument to be able to sequence them.

Another reason is removing primer dimers
