Hello,

I'm in my upper 30s, have a Bachelor's in CS and have been in the IT up to this point. I have been looking at the bioinformatics as a possible career move, but instead of relying on online searches, I wanted to ask real people for their current suggestions. I have a lot of questions, so I appreciate your time in answering them in advance. I have found some information here and there on the web, but a lot of it is from years ago, and I'm interested in the current state of things.

  • What is the job market like for those who would obtain a master's degree?
  • Is master's degree the right option anyway? For example, I saw that this site offers a 10 week program that appears to be very affordable.
  • If we are talking a degree, any particular kind/institution would be preferable in terms of obtaining subsequent employment on graduation? For example, Georgetown University in DC has a program with a 6 week internship. I was told that the majority of the students there are either employed or have moved to to PhD. It is very expensive.
  • In general, what would it take to become a successful bioinformatician?
  • What should I expect in terms of employment? Is this more of a freelance/temp field? What are the chances of obtaining full-time employment? A federal job?
  • What would be a typical pay for someone who just starts out?
  • Any particular cities/areas of the country that are more likely to offer employment?
  • How stressful is the job?

Thank you.

This is probably a better fit for the forum section, so I've moved it there (hope you don't mind!).
