Hello Everyone.

We are writing a new version of Biostar. It is based on the experiences and observations of maintaining and running the site for the last two years. Our aim is to make the codebase at least 10x smaller/simpler, the execution speed and scaling 10x better while making the site 10x more useful - hence the 1000x moniker.

The fundamental rationale for the rewrite is that we realized that search and email need to be a core component from the very beginning rather than being added later to the existing features. Finding content fast, having title, tag suggestions, cross linking existing similar content and all other such content related functionality needs support at the infrastructure level. Similarly we want to enable asynchronous communication via email, making answering and commenting be possible by replying to an email. Full support for skinning and customizing the site will be also added.

We expect to release a beta site within three weeks, with the final version released by March. There will be a documented migration path from existing Biostar 1 sites.

You can follow the development in the biostar2 branch of the main repository at https://github.com/ialbert/biostar-central/tree/biostar2

We will try to close and add all tickets and merge these as new functionality in Biostar 2.

This therefore a good time to post feature requests, open new issues and overall influence the new features on the site.
