Hello all,

I try to use ncbi remote database to make a blast search, but it failed. There is a warning message I don't understand. How can I use this option?

The warning message is

Please make sure your firewall does not block ports 4444-4544 bound for NCBI(130.14.29.112/165.112.7.12)

my command line is

$ blastn -db nr -query sequence.fasta -remote -out result.bls

Thanks~!

It says that port 4444-4544 are not accessible. Ports can be considered as channels through which your computer accepts data. In this case, the blast program needs to use port number 4444 and 4544.

I guess this error could be caused by two things: 1) some other software is using those ports or 2) it's blocked in your network. If you're on a campus/office network, you can perhaps ask the IT guy see which one it is and to try fix it.
