intuitive explaination of using HMM for alignment

I have been learning HMM recently and found that it is frequently used for sequence alignment. However, I can't sense the advantage of using it for this kind of task. I guess it is because of some intrinsic properties of HMM that make it suitable for alignment? Cam someone offer some intuitive explanation for this?
