This will serve as a forum for users of the AddHealth Omics data resource to discuss methodology, ask questions and exchange ideas.
You want to use Biostars as official support forum for AddHealth Omics data resource? You may want to provide links for the resource in that case.
This will be forthcoming! Thank you
Eh, does this qualify as bioinformatics? I don't think that your personal forum for the AddHealth Omics data resource is within the scope of biostars.
The AddHealth Omics data source is an NIH supported project that contains genomics, transcriptomics, microbiome studies etc. Here is a link to the project page https://www.cpc.unc.edu/projects/addhealth and an omics page will be added soon!
I see. And what exactly is then the purpose for which you'll use biostars?
to discuss methodology, ask questions and exchange ideas.
We have some unique datasets that we have recently released on dbGaP (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/gap/cgi-bin/study.cgi?study_id=phs001367.v1.p1 ) and tons more we're about to release. There are many hundreds of academic users of this data that share common interests and methodologies. Each year we host a users conference in which we address questions and approaches (website for most recent one is here https://www.cpc.unc.edu/projects/addhealth/events/2018-add-health-users-conference-1 ). The hope is that this will serve as a centralized place to hash out technical bioinformatics problems for our users.
Could be much easier and useful to make a google group even.
Great idea! We felt that integrating a user forum onto a site with an existing user base would encourage current researchers who haven't heard of this data source to explore it for their needs and it would keep everything more readily available. We might also do a google group in the future.
It is fine to use Biostars as your official support forum. You appear to have jumped the gun since the resource is not yet ready and available.
You would want to prominently post on your site that questions should be posted on Biostars with a particular
tag
that you (or your team) can follow so you can answer questions as they come up.There are many groups that use Biostars as an official support forum as Genomax says, but I would advise you not to use just a single thread for it.
Instead, your users can open questions/discussions as individual threads, and then tag them with
addhealthomics
or a tag of your choice (edit: just noticed genomax said this already - oops). You can then add this tag to you list of ‘followed’ tags to easily see all discussions.Putting all discussion in this thread will result in it becoming long and unwieldy as biostars isnt built for long discussions in a single thread (you’ll notice the boxes get smaller and smaller the further they nest). It would also end up being continually bumped to the front page every time anyone added or edited anything.
