I am a PHD student now majored in bioinformatics, and I've got a Computer Science degree.

I wish I could write some visualization and analysis software for biology, or do some work on algorithms of computational biology.

I wonder which journals should I focus on. Thank you very much for you guide

Hi, start looking here: http://www.biostars.org/post/show/792/which-bioinformatics-journals-do-you-follow/ If you search deeper biostar, you can find a few interesting suggestions.

However, as I just have a computer science background and do know little about biology. I want to focus on specific bioinformatic tools and algorithms specially.

The major journals in bioinformatics are (for algorithms, methods and software):

There are a lot of papers also in:

And then there are all the genomics, phylogenetics, evolution-related journals. What I suggest is that you follow the journals where you have the most articles on your research topic.

That's very helpful: As I am in biology college now, people around me tell me to follow nature/ science / cell, though these are really excellent, but I find out that I do not need the experiment thoughts.

Its good to think about the experiment thoughts but I agree with you. As a computer science major, I also focus on algorithm development and big data visualization.

I presume the top ten are in order. That's interesting as I was told PLOS Computation Biology was a higher tier journal than BMC Bioinformatics.

I don`t think its in the order of impact factor.

I post this question even before I start my PhD in computational biology.

After 3 years of my PhD study, I try to give a proper answer:

Short Answer : Not only journals but also conferences.

Long Answer The most thing you should focus on, if you want to design software or algorithms, is the following top conferences:

  1. ISMB

  2. RECOMB

  3. WABI

These conferences publish state-of-the-art ideas of algorithms and software.

Then it comes journals:

  1. Bioinformatics

  2. Genome Research (software)

  3. Nature Methods (software)

  4. Nature Genetics

  5. Nature Review Genetics

  6. Journal of Computational Biology

  7. BMC Bioinformatics

  8. Nucleic Acids Research

You may wonder: so many journals, how could I handle them.

Again, you need to firstly focus on those top conferences, and there are only three. Try to read all papers on them.

Then, try to follow some new research ideas in Nature series.

Finally, follow articles on these journals for the specific topics you are interested in.

That is my understanding, hope it helps.

As a new fish, I did not find the place holding articles from the 3 conference, could you pls give a hint?
