Hello all.

I've been recently thinking of applying for work in a large consortium. As I have zero experience with such situations, I would be grateful for your thoughts on my approach.

I planned to propose an extension of one of the main databases the consortium develops, based on my published research (Nature Methodology). Is this a relevant approach? How is this normally done?

Thank you very much.

What do you mean by this? Consortia are generally formed between large institutions for projects like TCGA. I am not sure if an individual can join a consortium, unless you are at an institution that is a part of one.

You have to give more details. In which capacity are you applying (i.e. PI, postdoc, developer, business ...) ? Where ? In Europe, a consortium often means a group of labs funded by a common EU grant.

Ah yes, a postdoc position.

I always encourage people to apply to postdoc positions with a project of their own or at least some idea of what they would want to do there. It shows motivation and that some thoughts went into the application. The application process may vary depending on the consortium but one typically applies to one of the member labs. If the position has been advertised then follow the instructions on how to apply provided in the advert. Otherwise, write to the lab's PI.

Thank you for this answer. This is the part not clear to me.
