I have whole genome genotypes in vcf.c1.GRU.tar compression form and would like to avoid working with the uncompressed version is it possible to extract a chromosome region from such file compression?

okay for those wondering a vcf.c1.GRU.tar directory contains multiple vcf files and must be uncompressed using tar -xvf file.vcf.c1.GRU.tar.
