Resources for identifying open source biofx projects I can contribute to

Hello,

Asked this question on Reddit and got slammed for it, not sure why.

I'm a professional software developer very interested in bioinformatics (specifically canine genomics) and was curious if there are any resources for identifying open source biofix projects that I could possibly contribute to, does such a list exist somewhere?

Other than just Googling and searching on Github, was curious to know if there's a resource somewhere that could help me find ongoing projects.

The Tools section on this very website has a huge array of open-source tools, many of which always need bug fixes/improvements.

There are also some huge and heavily used bioinformatics Python and R packages that always need help. Biopython, numpy, dplyr, and pandas are just a few very large, very active projects with many tasks and issues both large and small that need addressing.

Most tools aren't geared towards a specific organism, with the exception of certain annotation packages or those centered around a specific disease in a given organism (e.g. cancer). I doubt you'll find anything specifically geared towards canine genomics, as most tools that deal with directly manipulating genomics data aim to be flexible enough to work with any organism considering genomics data formats are relatively uniform across species.

The Debian folks which are responsible for packaging software and making it available have a list of what they call tasks. That is a long list of software in bioinformatics. There is also an overview in the DDPO of all their packages, including the number of bugs each package has. Feel free to help out!
