Crossover in humans

Hi!

Graphics that depict crossover events often show the exchange of the chromosome tips. I was wondering if this gives a realistic picture. Do crossover events with only one breakpoint genuinely take place or are they usually intrachromosomal with two breakpoints involved? If both exist, is one more common than the other? I didn't find any numbers. Thank you in advance!

Try searching for "recombination hotspots" in the literature.
