Head of Bioinformatics
Ref: 013649
Salary from: £49,230

The appointee will be responsible for the development of the CVR activities in viral bioinformatics and computational biology. This is a thriving programme in the CVR, and plans are underway to expand it into a national resource. Currently, we are focused on the development of novel data analysis strategies and software tools that can be used to answer questions of importance to our understanding of viral biology, evolution, emergence, transmission and diagnosis. We are seeking a candidate with expertise on any area of virus bioinformatics that is synergistic with the current research activities of the CVR.

The post holder will be responsible for providing operational and strategic leadership to support the CVR’s overall ambitions in viral bioinformatics. The appointee will disseminate research through high impact publications and assume a research leadership role within the CVR and beyond.

Candidates will normally have a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics or computer science with a strong background in biology or, alternatively, a PhD in virology or a related field with extensive experience in computational biology. Broad knowledge of current bioinformatics methodologies and an ability to adapt to the needs of this rapidly evolving field are expected. Depending on the level of appointment, proven success as a manager must include experience in an organisational capacity and provision of support to foster positive working relationships at all levels. The successful appointee will have a distinguished track record of research achievement, an international reputation and a demonstrated ability to publish and attract competitive funding. The appointment will be made either as Senior Research Fellow (equivalent of Senior Lecturer, Grade 9) or Professor (Grade 10), depending on experience and track record.

Informal enquires should be directed to Professor Massimo Palmarini (massimo.palmarini@glasgow.ac.uk). Apply online at: www.glasgow.ac.uk/jobs

Closing date: 17 July 2016

Interesting job offer. Nevertheless, £49,230 seems pretty low for a head of bioinformatics, no?

It does say from £49,230, so I suppose that it is the minimum salary.

The old discussion, if bioinformaticians are appropriately paid, or not. I would say that £50k is not enough for a head of bioinformatics holding a PhD. On the other hand, as long as there are good candidates available that work for this money, why should companies raise the salary? As computer scientist one might get higher salaries... at least that's my experience. Big companies still don't see the value of bioinformaticians.

Make sense David. But as old discussion, Universities salary packages are much subsidised relatively compared to Industries/Pharma for a Bioinformatician. Guess this is generic problem in the UK, also contagious across other countries.
