This is probably a long shot, but I've been searching all throughout the literature and genbank/ncbi databases and I cannot locate this sequence which has been cited numerous times in so many high profile papers. Where can I obtain this sequence or does someone have a copy of it they can send me? I believe this was the original paper:

Record for LRE3 appears to have been withdrawn by HUGO-HGNC but the BAC sequence cited in the paper is still available: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/15638743/

you wouldn't believe how long it took me to realize that apparently the convention is to cite the BAC as the locus where the insertion of the LRE3/L1 is, which means it actually is not there!! How did you know the record was withdrawn?

If you search with LRE3 (under gene or just a regular entrez search) @NCBI you will see that three records come up. The two for human indicate that they have been withdrawn.

ah that is interesting, but possibly because it was in incorrect loci and aliases do not match up.

Even the rat record does not appear to have any associated sequence. I wonder if you could get the sequence around the region (chr 2?) mentioned in the paper and look to see if you can find evidence of the transposon there. Have you considered writing to the authors to see if they would be willing to share the sequence?

I have considered this but just surprised this element has not been published despite how much it is cited. It is not in the reference genome, but I believe it does exist in 1000G so I will look there. Thanks for your help!
