I periodically see topics where people embed code hosted on github in their post. I couldn't find out how to do this.

Can please someone enlighten me?

Use GitHub gist. Follow this link and then paste the gist link in your post.

The link looks like this (.s replaced by [dot]s to bypass Biostars gist processor):
