The BRC Flow Cytometry Platform at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital/King's College London is offering a new position for a Senior Bioinformatician to expand our high dimensional Flow and Mass Cytometry data analysis capacity after including a Fluidigm Hyperion Imaging Mass Cytometer and a BD Symphony high end analyzer in our portfolio. The state of the art Core facility is focused on biomarker discovery for improved personalized medical care, deeper understanding of underlying immunological disease processes and assays for better drug discovery.

Recent technological advances in cytometry and also the widespread intensive use of Flow and Mass Cytometry in research and clinical settings have led to large data sets of increasing complexity that require novel approaches for analysis and data management. The new post holder will expertly analyze complex data sets with existing publicly available and commercial software solutions (e.g. R/Bioconductor, MATLAB, viSNE (t-sne), Spade, FlowJo, Cytobank suite, ImageJ, CellProfiler) and in some cases develop novel tools using statistics, mathematics and machine learning approaches for the analysis and visualization of high dimensional biological/biomedical data. S/he will work closely with the Senior Bioinformatician in our team as well as alongside faculty and scientists of all levels. An important aim of the position will be to establish and provide a professionally run high dimensional data analysis capacity for the newly installed Fluidigm Hyperion Imaging Mass Cytometer, allowing unprecedented deep histological phenotyping on tissue sections. Where required, s/he will create new software and analysis tools for our large and growing academic and commercial user base, with a focus on image analysis. The post holder will establish training courses for basic analytical operations and design in collaboration with the rest of the team streamlined protocols for experimental design, conduct and analysis. S/he must be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment, have excellent communication and customer service skills, and be comfortable working independently. There will be opportunities to present at regional and national scientific symposia and workshops. Developing collaborative relationships with leading laboratories is strongly encouraged. The role calls for a detail oriented and highly motivated individual with project management skills and the ability to deliver to time and target. Qualified candidates will have a PhD (mathematics/bioinformatics or also immunology/related field) and 3+ years of basic research experience using computational approaches. You will have a strong background in mathematics and statistics including expertise using scientific software package such as MATLAB and R. Excellent skills in programming (desired languages: Python, Perl, C/C++, Java), data visualization, machine learning and also software engineering are essential. Ideally, s/he will have worked with bench scientists/been a bench scientist in the past and have an understanding of Flow and Mass Cytometry and thorough grasp of immunology. A prior hand on experience in complex image data analysis is a definite plus. The ability to work proactively without direct supervision is essential.
